Shadow Cabinet Critic-Finance

Hello, my name is Jim McKinnon and I am the official Shadow Cabinet Critic-Finance, for the Freedom Conservative Party of Alberta.

Originally from Calgary, I have worked and gone to school in several provinces throughout Canada. Working on a seismic crew at an early age I eventually returned to adult high school at Alberta Vocational Centre (grade 10-12), then Mount Royal College (President’s list) and the University of Calgary (Dean’s list), graduating from Dalhousie University in Halifax N.S. in 1995.

Throughout the next 12 years after graduation, I worked in the financial services sector first in my own brokerage firm along with a partner in Courtenay, BC, and then as a senior manager within the credit union system in B.C reporting monthly to a board of directors made up of 3 CEO’s from three different credit unions and 3 of their respective directors. In 2003, an opportunity presented itself that allowed me to move my family back to Alberta. I accepted a position with the credit union in Wainwright, developing their financial planning platform, and eventually their wholly owned financial planning subsidiary (first credit union subsidiary licensed to sell life insurance in the history of Alberta), while obtaining my Certified Financial Planning (CFP) designation.

In January of 2007, I left the financial industry for a position in the oil and gas sector. Today, I am the Vice President, Operations for an oil and gas construction company, and am currently a matriculated student at Edinburgh Business School, pursuing my MBA.

I look forward to doing my best to provide both critical and non-critical commentary regarding the current government’s fiscal policies and objectives. Personally, I will always act under the highest level of integrity and provide the most straight forward and honest answer.

Integrity, to me, means two things:

To do what I say I’m going to do, without question.

To do the right thing, even when no one is looking.
